Exmoor Curriculum

The Exmoor Curriculum is a unique learning opportunity provided by this school. It is designed to encourage children to engage in learning about and within their home area, giving them a sense of place and belonging. It is a four year Programme developed with the assistance of the Exmoor National Park Authority and the Exmoor Society. Children work on the four year course to eventually become Junior Exmoor Rangers. This success is rewarded with a different uniform (black jumper and tie) for the graduates of the programme in Year 8.

The Four Year programme involves elements such as cycling proficiency; First Aid qualifications; sailing experience and an opportunity to achieve level one and sometimes level 2 RYA qualifications in kayaking, with children achieving qualifications in British Canoeing Union one star and two star awards. The programme also includes map reading, hill walking, camping, route planning and expedition experience. The pupils learn about the flora and fauna of the moor and are able to make presentations to various audiences about Exmoor.

The course is validated by the Exmoor National Park Authority. The course develops personal skills, leadership skills, confidence and  team working skills. It encourages co-operation, interaction with the community and the environment, awareness of the local area and global issues. It brings life to learning and learning to life!
